First grade at Tesseract is an exciting adventure in student-centered learning. Our integrated thematic curriculum stimulates young students and easily captures their interest and curiosity by linking curriculum-based concepts and skills to daily life experiences. Project-based learning is an essential part of first grade.
Students start their day as a group, greeting one another and sharing news and class projects in the lower school Morning Meeting. This experience brings the lower school together as a community and teaches children to be good listeners and confident public speakers. In first grade, our core curriculum includes an emphasis on language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and Spanish, with technology integrated throughout the program.
Language arts includes Jolly Grammar, an extension of kindergarten’s Jolly Phonics, which aids in teaching language forms in addition to reading, writing, spelling and grammar. Writing skills are further enhanced as students master grade-specific skills (crafts), as well as, being introduced to the Six Traits of Writing. The lower school library program also supports these concepts and skills, along with an introduction to various genres of literature.
In mathematics, our students utilize the Math In Focus (Singapore) Program. Tesseract first graders learn skills to enable them to become strategic mathematical problem solvers and persevere in solving problems. Through hands-on instruction and practice our students learn concepts about number bonds, ten frames, addition, subtraction, shapes and patterns, ordinal numbers, place-value, length, weight, graphing, tally charts, comparing numbers 1-120, mental math strategies, telling time, money and a beginning understanding of multiplication and division.
Through integrated thematic units, students develop an understanding of science and social studies concepts. Our themes include weather, community, balance and motion, food and nutrition, animals and habitats, environment and rocks. Students are encouraged to go beyond basic expectations as they explore and discover while celebrating the joy of learning.
Visual and performing arts, library and physical education are integral to the first-grade curriculum. Hands-on activities, field trips, and service learning projects also develop students’ abstract, creative and critical thinking skills while further enriching their educational experience.
Our social curriculum, Responsive Classroom® is as important as our academic curriculum. Being mindful of the diversity of each student individually, culturally and developmentally, we celebrate and respect similarities and differences within our Tesseract Community.
